Because of these subtle changes, the art of Cimabue is often considered the end of Byzantine period as well as the inspiration for one of the most influential early Renaissance artists, Giotto. The prophets are located at the bottom of the painting, so they are also not looking at the mother and child since they are under the throne. Cimabue also used layering with the angels to give some type of depth in the image. This portrayal was the ideal representation of a heavenly figure at the time.
